Math 170
Guidelines for the essay
The essay can contain anything that is related to mathematics. In particular it can be about a mathematical concept, a mathematician or the relation of mathematics with another discipline. It is not necessary that the essay contains mathematical content. But it should if the mathematics is central to the content and is not unreasonably hard. For example an essay on logic that mentions Boolean logic without defining the AND operator would not make sense. The essay should be at least 2000 words long in word count. If you don't like word count: it comes to about 4 pages in single spaced Times New Roman 12pts. There is no upper limit. But the length of the essay will not be taken into consideration. as long as it is longer than 2000 words. The essay should be given to me typed. Double spacing is not necessary. Also, references should be provided when necessary. The grading will be based on the overall quality of the work.
A first draft is due on Thursday the 19th of June. I am hoping to give the drafts back to you on Tuesday the 24th so you can have time to make revisions. I will still try to look at your essay if you give it to me before monday the 23rd. There is no loss of grade for not handing a first draft, but I can assure you that the overall quality (and hence the grade) of the essay will be significantly improved after you make the revisions I suggest to the first draft.
The final version is due on the 2nd of July.
Guidelines for the presentation
The presentation will be 20-30 minutes long and should basically be about the same subject as your essay. I highly recommend using slides. If you don't have powerpoint, you can use free open source alternatives such as Open Office or Neo Office (mac). The presentations should be on these dates. We will schedule each person's presentation before the 16th of June.
